Cardi B has officially dethroned Taylor Swift, as her song “Bodak Yellow” — Cardi’s pure cut swagger of a rap anthem — has taken over the No. 1 place, displacing Swift’s pop tantrum “Look What You Made Me Do” on the Billboard Hot 100.
Cardi B is the first female rapper to top the chart without an accompanying act since Lauryn Hill in 1998. Hill hit number one back those years with “Do Wop (That Thing).”
That makes her the second female rapper to top the Hot 100 with a solo hit, and only the fifth female rapper to top the Hot 100 chart at all in the same spot with Lil Kim, Shawnaa and Iggy Azalea.
In her road from the Bronx to the Billboard charts, Cardi B has been many things frequently deemed disposable in the annals of pop culture: an exotic dancer, an Instagram celebrity and a reality TV star.
At age 24, Cardi B has become the first woman rapper to score the No. 1 hit since Lauryn Hill did with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”.
“Bodak Yellow” bullets at No. 2 on the Streaming Songs chart with 46.4 million U.S. streams, up 14 percent, in the week ending Sept. 21, according to Nielsen Music.
The track also lifts 16-13 on Radio Songs, with 62 million all-format audience impressions, up 8 percent, in the week ending Sept. 24.
Cardi B’s solo debut was due out in October, but Cardi revealed that it’s going to be pushed back during an interview on The Breakfast Club last week. Main reason is because she keeps putting pressure on herself to top the runaway success of “Bodak Yellow.”
So, Cardi B is officially making her money moves now.
We’re so happy for her. We can’t wait for the album.
Until then we’ll be busy listening to ‘Bodak Yellow’ on repeat.
